As the Bella family gathers to celebrate the wedding of daughter Jan (Laura San Giacomo) to her beloved fiance it is revealed to her sister Renata (Holly Hunter) that Jan has been cheating on her fiance with another man. The wedding takes place as scheduled, with the groom unaware of his wife's pre-wedding behavior. Her younger sister's wedding triggers Renata's realization that her relationship with her live in lover (Griffin Dunne) is going nowhere. Renata moves out and moves back into her parents' (Danny Aiello and Gena Rowlands) homestead. Although the Bella family is loving and nurturing, Renata feels like a failure.

Determined to get her life and career on track, Renata travels to St. Thomas to attend a real estate seminar. While in St. Thomas Renata meets gregarious salesman Sam Sharpe (Richard Dreyfuss). Sam is very successful, quite wealthy and a bit arrogant. Immediately, Renata and Sam plunge into a hot and heavy affair. Upon returning home Renata introduces Sam to her entire family. The Bellas are clearly not used to people like Sam. His bold, brash and flashy manner rubs the entire family the wrong way. As Renata's relationship with Sam deepens the Bella family is thrown into chaos as they make their objections to Sam very clear. Will Renata throw away the love of a lifetime in order to please her family?
