Texas, 1962. Kevin Costner, in the company of his violent partner Butch, escapes from the local prison. Both men kidnap the 8 years old Phillip in order to protect their flight. Soon, Kevin has to kill Butch who was molesting Phillip. While Texas Ranger Clint Eastwood, the F.B.I. and the criminologist Laura Dern are coming closer and closer, Kevin and Phillip begin a wild journey through the prairies of Texas and will learn to know each other.
