The Nick Charles (Powell) family returns to Nick's childhood home against his better judgment. Sycamore Springs is all white picket fences, but dry as a bone. Nick tries to relax, but a hammock and his parents get the better of him. His reputation as an ace detective catches up with him and soon he and Nora (Loy) are investigating the murder of the local house painter despite his “retirement.”
