Rachel Brinkley is a real bitch. Even worse, her husband and sons dance around her, kowtowing and shaking in their boots. When each of her three sons marries, she gradually loses control, but only gradually.

It takes her favorite daughter-in-law, Petra; to cheat on Rachel's precious son to show Rachel who is erally in charge. Petra wants to show the Brinkleys that she wants to live her own life and not be in constant shadow of gratitude to them.
Ralph Brinkley foolishly leaves his wife in the dark about how he is losing his business after having been so successful in the past. He therefore must support his wife Petra and two sons by leaving them for the week to work in London. Since Petra has been kept in the dark, she is reluctant to pick up everything and move so that he can support the family. She wants a more simple life but there seems to be no middle ground.
Her solace becomes a new man who wants to be her lover. Of course, Rachel Brinkley, he husband Anthony and the family are appalled. Rachel cannot seem to manage that there is something that she cannot control.
It is Petra's sisters-in-law who come to her aid. While they may not approve of Petra's infidelity, they seem to side with her in that she must have rights.

The in laws visit the small apartment of their youngest son and his wife. The mother in law tells her daughter in law that she got pregnant "too quick," as if she were a slut.
