All the Ugly and Beautiful Things by Bryn Greenwood Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of All the Ugly and Beautiful Things

Themes

Pedophilia is great. This book clearly has an agenda, and the agenda is to show the reader that love between a 24 year old man and a 13 year old girl can be noble and pure. Kellen is portrayed as an extremely sympathetic character who is seduced into pedophilia by a 13 year old girl. Their love is considered to be "pure" because they have an intellectual connection, talking about the constellations every night in the meadow while Wavy gives Kellen hand jobs. The positive portrayal of this relationship is meant to normalize pedophilia.

Sticking your fingers into a 13 year old girl's v_gina is not sex. Wavy said that she and Kellen fooled the authorities into thinking they were having sex by having Kellen stick his hand inside her v_gina. Guess what, that's sex too.

Children of drug addicts are geniuses. Throughout the book Wavy is portrayed as a quiet genius (she knows constellations!). Children of crack addicts are typically geniuses, like Wavy.
