Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Plot Summary Part 2

Gradually, Eleanor spends more time with Raymond. They go out for drinks and talk on the phone. Eleanor doesn't think of Raymond as her boyfriend because she already has Johnnie, her imaginary boyfriend.

But you can tell that Raymond considers Eleanor his girlfriend. He shows concern for her and is always worried about her feelings. But throughout the entire book he never once tries to bone her. He is the perfect platonic boyfriend, the fantasy of frigid women everywhere.

When Eleanor's mom calls she is angry that Eleanor can't spend time with her. Her Mom is jealous of Raymond.

But in a subsequent call her Mom criticizes Eleanor for not getting a boyfriend, telling her she is doing nothing with her life.

We learned that Eleanor is not a virgin. She lived with a man named Declan who beat the crap out of her when he wasn't boning her. She met him at a botanical gardens, and because she was so weak-willed, Eleanor allowed Declan to move into her apartment within a week, allowing him to bone her whenever he liked.

Eventually, Eleanor got rid of Declan when he broke her arm. She explains the whole story like a retarded person would, saying she learned that boyfriends shouldn't beat up their girlfriends, as if explaining a lesson told to a five year old.

Eleanor is offered a promotion at work, to office manager. I'm not sure what her current job is, but obviously it is something even more unimportant than office manager. Eleanor tells her boss she wants more time to think about whether she wants to accept the promotion. The suspense here is tremendous. This book is a real page turner, isn't it?

Sammy the old guy they sent to the hospital dies. We don't care because he was merely a vehicle to get Raymond and Eleanor together. Maybe Sammy died of boredom. Maybe Sammy died of boredom reading this awful book. I think that's what happened.

Eleanor realizes that Johnnie is never going to bone her; indeed, she realizes that Johnnie will never know who she is. She gets depressed and goes home and takes off all her clothes, drinks bottles of vodka, and lies down on the ground.
