Why did stormtroopers wear armor that didn't work against blasters? Message Board

Armor, though it's clunky and slows you down, makes sense when it protects you from attack. But as we've seen, armor doesn't stop blasters, so what's the point in wearing them? In fact, armor doesn't even stop Ewok arrows!

Since stormtrooper armor isn't functional, do you think it's a fashion statement? That the Emperor liked his soldiers to be making clunking sounds when they walked around in matching white? What do you think about that?

Also, check out my video showing how ineffective stormtrooper armor really is.

rand posts on 11/25/2005 10:12:09 PM i've seen all three of the original movies at least a dozen times each and that never crossed my mind. maybe the impact of the blast just stuns the stormtrooper. now i have another question, why is it that in almost all scifi, not just star wars, when someone fires a blaster or a phaser at an inanimate object it blows a humongus hole in it, but the same blaster fired at someone only an instant later only scorches their clothes? take care.
Loto posts on 11/20/2005 9:03:07 PM First, the armor has more functions than "protection". It has life support systems, has an air filter and oxygen tanks, and holds weapons and ammo. Also, when a cop wears bullet proof armor and gets shot, hes not neccassarily going to survive for sure. A bullet is strong. Same as with Stormtrooper armor. Its designed to protect, its not a force-field and obviously wont make sure the trooper is perfectly safe. In addition, a blaster shot is VERY hot. Did you not see the movies? It could penetrate the armor. Also, maybe the trooper doesnt die, but rather gets the wind knocked out of him and lies in pain, then gets back up without you noticing it. There are so much more factors that could support this.

Kelborn posts on 11/7/2005 10:38:39 PM He probably cut their armor budget so that he could create the death star and all those star destroyers. Also the stuff is suppposed to protect from small things such as rocks and protect them from getting scratches in the underbrush, but like that is going to help.
kristopher posts on 9/21/2005 5:58:47 PM you rock my world you are the coolest star wars people!
comander tarr posts on 9/9/2005 2:16:14 PM why did the clones in episode3 have different body armor than episode2 I mean the body armor was just fine then all of a sudden in episode3 they have smaller guns the armor looks so stupid and then the emporor changed it to this suff that ewoks chould penetrate
Zackary Kain posts on 8/3/2005 6:40:56 AM I thinc, everyone will agree that Star Wars weapons are much more powerfull then rifles or submachineguns that are used today. Contemporary body armor canot stop direct hits from such guns (some can but are very very heavy). Body Armor is rather meant to protect from shrapnel or glancing hits. The same applies to Star Wars. A direct blaster hit can kill a Stormtrooper while the armor protecs from concussion and near-misses. That Troopers get killed by Ewok Arrows is clearly a plot-element. Lucas wanted some fun to prevent episode VI from becoming to dark-sided so introduced the Ewoks. Bad marksmanship of Troopers is also a story element to make the heroes look more heroic.
Alex posts on 7/26/2005 4:06:58 PM NO DUH, the person who said about real life armor not taking a direct hit is right! no armor ever can take a full force blow, have you seen what a M 16 can do if it hit you head on? sure it has a small hole where it enterd, but it explodes befor its about to go out, so yeah!!!
MR-64 posts on 7/6/2005 6:12:31 PM Maybe the empire just didn't spend the money needed to send its troops into combat with adequate protection. It happens...doesn't it?
Gemma posts on 7/6/2005 8:46:31 AM Golly gosh you are so right! Why to god did they wear that rubbish armour? It was so useless. I must say though that all that plastic clunking and the noises that they made as they were walking added to the atmosphere of the film. maybe the armour protected them while they were in hand to hand combat?
