Why did stormtroopers wear armor that didn't work against blasters? Message Board

Armor, though it's clunky and slows you down, makes sense when it protects you from attack. But as we've seen, armor doesn't stop blasters, so what's the point in wearing them? In fact, armor doesn't even stop Ewok arrows!

Since stormtrooper armor isn't functional, do you think it's a fashion statement? That the Emperor liked his soldiers to be making clunking sounds when they walked around in matching white? What do you think about that?

Also, check out my video showing how ineffective stormtrooper armor really is.

Ithorian posts on 6/11/2005 4:38:19 AM In the movies, when stormtroopers got hit, it didn't do anything to their armor but yet they still fell down and died. It's the same with the clone troopers in the new movies.
EMpiral armor tech... posts on 5/30/2005 4:30:27 PM the reason that the armor is suppose to be able to withstand bullets and glancing hits form blasters is simple.. its physics.. when you where a bullet proof vest its stops the bullt due to the fact that the bullet s moving at such a high speed that when it hits the materal it flattens out and expands.. that is kinetic energy at its bets.. not arrows and spear move at a far slower rate of speed and although the armor is tough.. it was designed for high impast prjectiles not low impact.. and blaster fire although high impact . does not spread out nor does it slow down cuase it hits you.. it is far to hot and far to fast..in order for armour to be affective against blaster it would have absorb energy.. very rapidly and that also causes heat so you see its pretty improbable to make the armor blaster proof.

warren posts on 5/21/2005 9:12:30 PM Why would they need stormtroopers, when they had robots before?
junkwalker posts on 5/21/2005 6:04:09 PM be glad that the mandalorian warriors didn't sell thier armor specs. to anybody. but it probibly wouldn't matter, the empires contractors would just cut corners on it to.
StarFan posts on 5/21/2005 3:32:47 AM The armor is designed to not stop blaster fire from a direct hit but, to shield the trooper from angled shots. Also according to the comics and books it should be able to stop normal bullets that may be used by systems in the outer rim, so rocks and spears should be right out. However, in episode VI it is obvious that the little ewoks pierce right through the armor with the little tiny arrows. The armor is supposed to made of plastistell. (excuse spelling) I was at a lose as well when in the comics as well when a group of aliens through spears right through the armor, where I can under stand the arrows may of hit the webing of the neck or under arm but, right through the armor? I wish I had a strait story about it.

Skillerz posts on 5/20/2005 3:49:37 PM While the armor won't protect against a direct hit it would protect against grenades and glancing hits.
Nomad posts on 5/20/2005 5:28:12 AM So how come there even was an Empire, when the Stormtroopers clearly couldn't shoot straight ?
unnamed posts on 5/19/2005 8:19:48 PM the armor was built to take a indirect hit. all the shots taken by a stormtrooper throughout the movies were direct hits. also the plastic was fabricated to be blaster resistant. as for the Ewok arrows, the plastic was fabricated to take an energy hit, not a matter hit.
