Part of thier assualt leads them into Turkey, a NATO member and US allie. Thus, Thomas Mitchem and his scout platoon experience the horrors of high intensity warfare.

What makes Cavalry Scout different from other war experiences is the reason Thomas Mitchem has to tell his story. Faced with the complex emotions and moral conflicts of having experienced violence and death on the ultimate scale, he finds his relationship with Jessica faultering under the strain of his termoil.
