Harry Turtledove Message Board

Justin posts on 8/13/2007 9:19:19 AM Yeah, I groaned when I read that name. It was quite goofy. Like a lot of what Gizzi says about the so-called "next series."
Feather the Stone posts on 8/13/2007 8:02:14 AM It looks to me more likely that this way2eval is really the same as 2kule4you, just trying to get attention. Ah, children... Did anyone notice the twee name of the guy Morrell was talking to in his last scene in IatD -- Clark Butler?
bignate posts on 8/12/2007 11:59:28 AM Come on, Jack. Shame on you for encouraging him.

Jack posts on 8/12/2007 6:04:05 AM My theory is that the man Cassius killed was s body double, and that Featherston really did sail to Rhodesia--but was killed when his ship ran aground trying in vain to make the last leg of the voyage.
Makkabee posts on 8/11/2007 5:37:02 PM "Dealings with the US" could mean dealings within the central government, or dealings with the US as a whole. If he's referring to Haiti as a new independent nation the comment makes no sense as it had been independent for roughly 150 years. Maybe he means new as in "reinvented" if he's figuring on large-scale angolophone black immigration there and a new elite taking over for the ones murdered by the Freedomites. Which actually would make an interesting story, not that that's proof that it'll happen any more than continued Yezda presence near Garsavra is proof that HT will carry the Videssos universe forward past the events of Swords of the Legion.

"I want it" does not equal "it will happen." Most of us learned this lesson as small children. Hopefully others here will eventually figure it out as well.

In the mean time they're welcome to keep on sailing to Rhodesia in the alternate universes between their ears.

Jack posts on 8/11/2007 12:39:24 PM If he meant Haiti was going to become a state, he would have said (I hope) ''dealings with the other states'' instead of ''dealings with the US.'' I'm bemused that we're analyzing his textual evidence when he doesn't analyze Turtledove's or anyone else's except those seven magical barflies' in his favorite pub.
Makkabee posts on 8/11/2007 12:03:39 PM Perhaps he meant Haiti as a state within the American Union rather than an independent nation. Granted, there's no textual support for such speculation, but when has that stopped him?
Jack posts on 8/10/2007 11:43:03 PM *New* state of Haiti? Haiti became independent in 1804. And we're not going to leave you and your ''friends'' -- who don't seem to come around here anymore -- to have pointless, moronic discussions based on a fantasy whose invalidity you so bravely refuse to consider. I just thought Mak shouldn't bother trying to have a legitimate discussion on HT that sane people could enjoy here, because people like you will just show up and ruin it. And as for those seven misdirected yokels on the pub site, they're all rank amateurs like yourself. None of you have any connection to HT or Del Rey and certainly no ability to compel either of them to do what they very obviously don't want to.
John Gizzi posts on 8/10/2007 2:30:56 PM Honest, Jack? By all means, leave, and let those of us who wish to discuss and have discourse on the next series, as the seven reviewers do on the pub page that asks to write your own review. Just type in "Harry Turtledove--In At the Death" and you'll get it. One other thread another poster pointed out that could be fascinating is Utah coming back into the US--or possibly helping out a resurgent CSA. My guess is that it will take until the 1990's and that Mitt Romney and his father bring Utah back and emerge as heroes. Also, it will be interesting to watch a new state of Haiti and its dealings with the US and whether full civil rights is eventually restored.
Jack posts on 8/10/2007 1:17:22 PM Ah, Mak, don't bother. If this place had ever been worth saving -- and it wasn't -- that ship has long since sailed. If Gizzi and his friends don't want to keep up their stupid argument, or if they do but we get tired of banging our heads against brick walls, we might as well just leave.
