i cried reading this book, for david and myself.i survived similar treatment in ww2.i was so beaten , starved and abused that the schooldoctor was called to examine me. but since my mother was already in a concentration camp, they said, well, there is nothing we can do. and i have a class picture to prove what i loked like.the torture i endured is indescribable and unbelievable but it happened i had to eat my own vomit, so believe what that man writes.

First of all let me just say to that stupid guy who keeps writing on this page to only make people mad, SHUT UP and GO AWAY!!! I belive everything in this book. Honestly I wish everything that he went through would of happen to you, I'm sure you would not last a day with what he did. Get a life dude. If you don't belive his storys why are you taking your time here writing? As for his mom she got what she deserved( hell) and if you so badly want her you will when you get to hell. if you call him a lier hour calling the people that helped him liers. just cuz you got it good all your life eat like a pig and not appreciate what you have does not mean you have to go and call him a lier, you just jealous you low life that you got it good all your life and your not half the man he is or even have the money he had so shut up.
David I hope you make a movie soon, I love your books!

In response to Andrew from Canada, I don't think you can make this stuff up. I understand how unbelievable this is, and how can someone who went through all this for years come out all right? Well, I know about someone firsthand who was wrongfully accused of something and spent many years behind bars. This person came out of there stable, loving and caring. It's amazing what the will can do.

Though there are some who question the subject matter in David's books, I can assure you that, as a survivor of sexual abuse, I admire, respect and condone all of David's informative books which have educated many and have saved the lives of those who did not know how to get out of their personal hell. Thank you for all you have done. There are survivors groups being formed every day for all of the many who have been through abuses. There is recovery and a healthy and happy ending when you get the help you need and deserve to have. God bless you, David! May you go on to help many more with the work you continue to do.

What is the efficacy of a school library for junior high school having the book "A Boy Called 'It'" on the book shelves without any counseling service being provided? It seems to be a prescription for future mishaps! When I read it, the seventh grader grandchild had brought it home and the fourth grader in the home was reading it over the weekend. There was no parental supervision whatsoever and I feel that maybe I should provide some commentary but I do not know where or how to begin.

Hi Dave, I have just finished reading your books. I couldn't put them down. I feel so sad but joy at the outcome of your trials in your life. I am also humbled to know that in all of that you have continued to have forgiveness in your heart and I know that was the main key in your success in life. You have also maintain your faith in God who has in times you thought had abandaned you but know that he was there for you and you always kept a prayer in your heart. I do believe in your books and what you had been through and I hope that those that goes thru trials in life their life and read your books will help them know that they can conquer and overcome their trials. They just have to have faith in themselves and God.
I love you and appreciate your books and the person you are. You are a good person and you deserve happiness in your life. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Whilst I have no doubt Mr. Pelzer suffered at the hands of his parents, his mother's directly and his father's through apathy, I do take issue with some of his writings. Having read and re-read the first two books in his childhood trilogy, I will not be reading the third. I find it somewhat hard to beleive he actually survived, let alone functioned somewhat "normally" if the level of abuse he suffered was in fact real, and not somewhat "memorially embellished". As a member of a family in which there were differing levels of abuse, I know somewhat firsthand how debilitating even minor physical/mental abuse can be. I know I will catch flak (yes, that is the correct way to spell it, there is no "c") for this statement, and Mr. Pelzer, or even his fans, will state "No, what was written in the memoir are the facts, the abuses suffered are real, not embellished or mis-remembered". I can only counter that, if Mr. Pelzer's memory is "oh-so accurate", he must have had some very influential friends, or his foster-father Harold Turnbough may have been an editor for Harpercollins, as he stated in The Lost Boy "...Harold and I seemed to bicker about who was hogging the lamp by the end of the couch, as I tried to read books on self-esteem by Norman Vincent Peale or others on the stranger side, such as Your Erroneous Zones."(pg.s 258-259 in Coming Around in 'Health Communications, Inc. paperback) This does seem odd, as later in the same chapter, he gives a time reference that "By July of 1976".....The oddity?; Wayne Dyer's "Your Erroneous Zones" was not published until August of 1976!....perhaps Mr. Pelzer had gotten an advanved copy? I could (and probably will) go back through the books and will, no doubt, come across many other inconsistencies, in fact, I may actually just read "A Man Named Dave" in the end for just such a reason.
It is a know fact that David Pelzer's brothers have questioned the veracity of his memories, and I suggest all of his fans also read his brother Richard's books to get a more even view of things. I do not propose to, or never will, doubt, that all the Pelzers' suffered greatly and needlessly at the hands of a horrible example of a Mother, however, I can not condone the "profitting" from it. I beleive it was Slate Magazine's Editor, David Plotz, who dubbed him "The Child-Abuse Entrepreneur"; kind of an apt title. In fact, and I para-phrase David Pelzer's brother Richard, it would behove us all to donate directly to a charity to end or ease the abuses suffered by many of us in our childhoods, be it monetarily or in time, than ask them to spend tens of thousands to hear someone say "Look how good I turned out despite it all".
Actions do speak louder than words, and rather than receiving the cathartic thrill through reading of someone else's life, as real or embellished as it may be, the true measure of "putting it all behind and moving forward" can be found in helping those who were once where you were get to where you are now, no matter how humble those circumstances are.
